What UML Tools do you use?

Recently I read the article “Free UML tools” which explains about the various free UML tools available. That article made me think “What UML tool do people actually use?”. Over the years, I have used tools like Microsoft Visio, ArgoUML, NetBeans UML, StarUML and finally settled with JUDE. How about you? What UML tools do you use? Some of you might use more than one tool (at work, at home etc), so feel free to choose all the options applicable.

We use “Enterprise Architect” from Sparx Systems. This is a low price, high quality UML and modeller tool. It has lots of good functionality, you can download a free viewer, it can generate full html or Word documentation, and is available for download with very little hassle. Try it!

I second the Enterprise Architect recomendation, is much better than Netbeans and it was better than Argo in an evaluation we did a couple of years ago. It covers anything we need UML related, generates Java code, C# code, PostgreSQL scripts, etc.
    It’s commercial but quite affordable.

I have to agree that Enterprise Architect is first class UML tool. One of the best.

I use Enterprise Architect. Here are a few link to some free tools in Visio and EA I have accumulated over the years that I have made available for download…

We (at my company) use Enterprise Architect, too. I haven’t used any other UML Tool, so I can’t tell if it’s the best or not. Nevertheless, I think that is quite easy to use, and it has a really neat integration of the svn technology, in order to share your projects with others

We also use Enterprise Architect. After evaluating Dia, ArgoUML and other tools we found EA as the best UML tool.

That’s six votes for “Enterprise Architect”. Looks like I have missed that in the poll options!

Have you guys considered trying Yuml? (http://www.yuml.me/)

It’s a great online web app for making quick UML Class and Case diagrams, and it’s 100% free!

I use Violet UML. There is a free version, and it is very simple to use.

Bit surprised by the number of votes NetBeans has received. I have used it when it was integrated into NetBeans from Sun’s enterprise tools. Haven’t looked at it in recent times. It’s time to check how that looks now.

Poseidon (closed source, commercial) was forked from ArgoUML (free, open source) over 8 years ago, so there’s really no way they should be sharing a single survey choice. Even in non-Internet years, that’s a long time.

In addition to Violet UML which was already mentioned, you’re also missing a number of other open source alternatives including ArgoEclipse (Eclipse-based version of ArgoUML), BOUML, Umbrello, Papyrus, TopCASEd…

The NetBeans numbers seem skewed (high), perhaps a selection effect based on your readership? NetBeans has had a couple of different UML implementations, so it would be interesting to know which one(s) people are using.

Hello, I`m using Visual Paradigm UML, because it`s simple and has support for many UML 2.1 diagrams. I thinnk that Netbeans UML is very nice, but lacks support for other diagrams.

Jude Community by Change Vision. I’ve used a lot of different UML tools, some ridiculously expensive, and none of them have proven to be as user friendly for pure UML as Jude has. Oh, and did I mention the Community version is free?

My most hated UML tool? Rhapsody by Telelogic/IBM. Utter crap. Granted, it might be built and intended to do more than just UML, but UML is it’s focus and my goodness is it cumbersome to use for that.

Borland Together. Once stung by the LiveSource (simultaneous round-trip) bug, always addicted. The added MDA-stuff in later versions is promising. Hopefully, I could use it professionally some day.

If you wanna to create online, collaborative UML diagrams – http://creately.com will be a good options. We’ve included smart shapes that recognise the UML artefacts and make it easy to add connectors and relationships between Objects, etc. Check out the range of UML support here – http://creately.com/Draw-UML-and-Class-Diagrams-Online
